Trivia Tadka

Panaka is usually prepared during Sri Rama Navami, a festival celebrating the birth of Lord Rama. It is also commonly known as panakam in Andhra Pradesh. This traditional simple drinks helps cool the body and also quench thirst during summers.

Ingredients

  • Lemon (nimbu) juice, freshly squeezed (3/4 cup)
  • Sugar (2/3 cup)
  • Fresh mint (pudina) leaves (1/4 cup)
  • Salt (1/2 tsp)
  • Black salt (1/2 tsp)
  • Black pepper (kali mirch), ground (1/2 tsp)
  • Cold water ( 1 1/2- 2 litres)
  • Cumin (jeera) roasted and ground to garnish (1/4 tsp)
  • Mint leaves (to garnish)
  • Ice (cubes)

Method

  • In a large vessel dissolve sugar in water, then add salt and black salt stir well and let the salts dissolve completely.
  • Add lemon juice, mint leaves, ground black pepper, and roasted cumin powder.
  • Stir the water well.
  • Taste for balance of flavours.
  • Add salt or sugar as necessary.
  • Now add ice cubes and serve in a tall glasses.
